My recent paintings address concepts of inside and outside, and perhaps insiders and outsiders, as California native plants and animals share domestic interiors with solitary figures. This is not only a suggestion of the temporality of physical structures, but a contemplation of what it means to feel safe. Loss of access is an ongoing issue, both personally and collectively as a native Californian, and I am exploring ways to reconstruct the idea of “dwelling.” By suggesting inaccessible spaces where past, present, interior and exterior mingle, these paintings endeavor to present moments of safety and provide a contrast with my drawings that explore loss and trauma.
